When this is the right choice
- Torque per gram. 30 N·m at 660 g beats every other frame in the range and most harmonics at twice the mass.
- Planetary tolerance of shock. A knee or a foot that gets hit is a better fit here than a flexspline.
- 48:1 in one stage gives a usable holding ratio without a second reducer.
- Half a kilogram less than a comparable harmonic at this torque class.
When it is the wrong choice
- Near-zero backlash requirements. A planetary has more backlash than a harmonic — if a wrist has to reverse within arcminutes, this is the wrong drive.
- Power-off holding. No brake.
- Force control. No sensor; look at the harmonic lines with -F or an integrated sensor.

DM-J6248 FAQ
How much backlash does a 48:1 planetary have?
More than a harmonic — typically arcminutes rather than tens of arcseconds, and it grows with wear. We ask the factory for the figure at quotation rather than quote a generic number.
Can it be a knee joint?
On a small quadruped or a light biped, yes, and the shock tolerance is a genuine advantage. On a full-size humanoid knee, 97 N·m peak is not enough.
Is there a brake version?
No. If the axis must hold at power-off, plan an external brake or a self-locking ratio.
How long does it take to ship?
Confirmed per order at quotation.
