When this is the right choice
- Dual absolute encoder at 196 g. Nothing else this light publishes two encoders, and on a finger that is the difference between knowing where you are after a power cycle or re-homing a hand mid-task.
- 51:1 is genuinely fast. The 51:1 build trades 0.4 N·m rated for roughly twice the output speed — useful on a thumb that has to get out of the way quickly.
- Same PHU protocol and firmware as the Φ170 frame, so a hand and a waist can live on one bus with one commissioning tool.
- Φ40 fits a finger or a small wrist roll where the PHA08L at Φ43 is just too fat.
When it is the wrong choice
- 6.3 N·m ceiling. Same limit as PHA08L: no back-driving, no drop, no hard stop without a compliant mount or a slip clutch.
- Force control is not realistic at this size. The build exists on paper for the series; at 1.65 N·m rated the useful signal is below what most cells resolve. If you need contact sensing on a finger, use tactile sensors, not the joint.
- 196 g for 1.65 N·m is heavier per newton-metre than a planetary — you are paying mass for zero backlash and two encoders.
Alternatives at a similar level
- EYOU PHA08L-101-C — Same 1.65 N·m without the dual encoder, 207 g
- EYOU PHU11H-52 — 5 N·m at 403 g — the next frame up
- DAMIAO DM-J3507 — Planetary, 1 N·m class, lower cost, has backlash

PHU08L-40 FAQ
51:1 or 101:1 for a finger?
51:1 if the finger has to move fast and grip lightly — 1.25 N·m rated, but higher output speed. 101:1 if grip force matters more than speed. Fingers that have to pinch hard usually want 101:1 with a tendon reduction after the joint, not a bigger joint.
Is there a brake?
No. Below Φ52 the PHU brake is not a documented option, and a finger with a brake is unusual anyway — the tendon or the mechanism holds position.
How long does it take to ship?
Confirmed per order at quotation — connector build and cable length are the variables, plus the factory schedule. The quotation states the date.
